Range Rover Evoque vs BMW X1

NZ car magazine NZ Autocar did a comparison between the above cars in its Jan 12 issue. Seeing as the X1 for many would be the benchmark for the best small SUV, and the Evoque is the new kid on the block, a worthwhile comparison.

First up, it said the Evoque was the car with all the style. Not hard when compared with Germanic style, which let's face it doesn't really exist. There wasn't much in them on the road, but the X1 got the nod dynamically. In the refinement, the Evoque was the big winner, being much quieter and nicer instruments. The cabin itself is much better in the Evoque, giving a very solid feel.

So well done NZ Autocar for getting a comparison in seeing the Evoque has only just arrived down here. Well done Evoque, for getting it so right with basically a brand new model in a new niche for LR. The X1 got its lederhosen pulled down for a good spank, but I'm sure BMW will be smarting and want to come back with something better. For now thought, its all RR Evoque.

Land Rover Sales By Country: 2011

Land Rover had a very good 2011 with sales up in almost every country. The new Evoque will compliment the rest of the range nicely in 2012, making for yet another record year.

In some countries, LR has commercial sales which I have yet to confirm. Those nations have the the whole entry italicised. For example, Italy has a substantial number of such sales and as I cannot yet add them, shows a 16% drop on 2010. This is because the 2010 figure is a complete one. As I find out the necessary data, I will add it.

India is an estimate and the whole entry is also italicised for that reason. This is the only estimate here, but I made an exception to highlight the bizarre fact that LR will not disclose accurate figures for that country. Considering this is where the brand is now owned, and sales are climbing well, you may be left scratching your head as I am.

If anyone can assist in revealing more sales for LR, it will add to many people's enjoyment. The Internet is now informing people of things they seek in areas such as this. Areas that were once impossible to learn anything about. Perhaps companies such as LR will realise that this sort of data is also good PR, and will assist in making it more available.

PS. Thank you for all the sources that contributed to this list. Last updated: 07.08.12

LR Defender Sales By Country: 2010

In many European nations, some Land Rovers are classified as commercial vehicles. In most but not all cases, it would be a Defender model. When sales are released by model, the commercial sales are not always included. Therefore, below you see two lists, the first Defender sales as released and the second unspecified commercial LR sales.

1 Italy 1,571
2 Germany 817
3 Spain 789
4 South Africa 776

(The model is so appropriately dressed).

Most countries appear in one or the other list, some in both such as Germany. The majority of the UK commercial sales would be the Defender, but I am sure not all. As to the true figures, only the local importer and Land Rover would have the answer. If anyone can add anything.....

GM World's Biggest Vehicle Maker: 2011

I wrote a while back about who was likely to be the world's biggest vehicle maker for 2011. Well it all came true. Of late, it has been GM and Toyota battling it out for supremacy. Both sides accepted how the other counted its sales. Now the VW Group has joined the calculations. Suddenly VW isn't happy how GM counts its figures, it wants them counted in such a way that makes them top in 2011. VW says it doesn't count Scania and MAN, truck makers it has majority stakes in.

This is how it is VW. GM has been counting this way for years. Toyota had the dignity to accept how GM did it. You want to change things to suit yourself. I can see why Suzuki wants out of its tie up with you. As a company you are arrogant and have to have things your way. Look at Toyota and learn some humility. Even if you counted those truck makers, you would still be a distant second.

So what is the true record of vehicle production? GM a fine 9 million plus, VW a piddling 8.1 million and Toyota an unfortunate 7.9 million - due to natural disasters and internal decision making.

Summary: I'm not looking forward to VW ever becoming the top vehicle maker. It's already oozing arrogance out of every pore.

Jaguar XK Sales By Country: 2010

The XK is a stunning vehicle. It effortlessly consumes miles and does it with style. I would imagine many of the US sales are in California, perhaps many seen cruising in Rodeo Drive. It probably deserves to sell in larger numbers than it does in many countries, but those who do purchase such a vehicle get something rather special.

Range Rover/Sport Sales By Country: 2010

The Range Rover has always been a solid seller and continues as such. However, it has been easily outsold by the Sport model since its introduction. There will always be those who like the regal Range Rover, but the Sport brings a dynamic edge to the genre.

Jaguar XJ Sales By Country: 2010

Big, luxury barges do not sell in the numbers they once did. Luxury SUVs have taken much of the market from them. However, in some countries they still are popular, such as China. Unfortunately I am unable to find anything for China on model breakdown. What I have been able to sniff out is below:

1 USA 4,278
2 UK 1,827
3 Germany 545
4 China 256
5 Russia 225

This is a very well styled vehicle. It even graces the top of the page in the title area. It is amazing that it sold in the same numbers in Belgium as it did in Canada, and that Belgium nearly outsold Italy and France.

Jaguar XF Sales By Country: 2010

The XF is the best car in its class. It is beautiful, refined and handling is superb. Even in this class, most of its competitors are sterile offerings. Not this cat. The downside to it is it arrived with too many alternatives missing. A small diesel has taken ages to arrive. The shooting brake model is still to come, and no 4wd option is available. For these reasons, and the fact that Jaguar isn't in some race to sell more cars at the risk of hurting residual prices and falling into a loss making scenario, sales are not huge. Still, that brings a certain exclusivity, and hopefully in the full length of time, a full range of model variants.

LR Discovery Sales By Country: 2010

The Discovery, or LR4, is a vehicle of contrast. It is rugged, yet refined; butch, but smooth. It gives you the best of both worlds and for that reason the best selling LR in markets such as Australia and South Africa.

I think it a fine looking vehicle, perhaps my favourite with the LR stable or any SUV on the market. It's only downside is its weight, which will come down with the next model. Overall a strong, refined vehicle.

Please note that in some countries, a sizable number of LR sales are counted as commercial vehicle sales. When I find out what those commercial sales are by model, I add them to the above figures. In some markets I cannot ascertain what they include. In many cases, they would be Defender sales, but not always.

No doubt it will now be somewhat overshadowed by the drop dead gorgeous Evoque. However, its clean lines and excellent off road talents will make it the preferred set of wheels for quite a few people.

Please note that in some countries, a sizable number of LR sales are counted as commercial vehicle sales. When I find out what those commercial sales are by model, I add them to the above figures. Car Sales Uruguay: 2011

Car sales are booming here, well above the average of last decade. Two sizable increases over tha past two years have seen to that. Chevrolet is the big brand in this small South American country. VW cannot even get close, standing a distant second. Chinese brand Chery only came to the market here in 2008 and is already 3rd with 6.6% of total sales. I'm picking (no pun intended) Chery will struggle to succeed for now in more affluent lands, but in developing nations such as Uruguay, there is a sizable market for affordable cars such as Chinese brands offer.

Vehicle Sales Colombia: 2011

Colombia has a low ratio of car ownership, yet suffers traffic jams. It seems the problem is an under developed road system. The government would like to restrict car ownership through auctioning registration plates Singapore style. That won't take cars off the road, but rather increase the age of cars in use. Improving roading is expensive though.

As for car sales, GM has always been top here (that I know of), and 1 in 3 cars is a hefty share of the market. It has been consistently so for years as well.

Car Sales Europe: 2011

ACEA figures (below) reveal that 1,357,500 cars were sold in Europe (less Russia) in 2011, down 1.4%.

VW took top spot with 12.4% penetration, up from 11.2% in the preceding year. While VW makes some good cars, the Passat for example is exceedingly ordinary, yet it is doing very well for the brand in Europe. This debunks the myth that buyers in Europe are always discerning, but rather badge followers like car buyers everywhere. Rating: Good cars, but overachieving.

Ford came in second, with 7.9% share (8.1% in '10). They should have done better with the new Focus. Rating: A good placing, but losing market share surprising. Wrong badge image maybe? Third was

Renault with 7.7% (8.3%), which lost 2nd spot to Ford this year. Rating: It will continue to fall down the rankings as it sacrifices sales for better margins.

Now for the figures in thousands:

1 VW 1,684 +9%
2 Ford 1,078 -3%
3 Renault 1,045 -9%
4 Opel 989 -2%
5 Peugeot 912 -9%
6 Citroen 771 -8%
7 Fiat 682 -17%
8 Audi 680 +9%
9 BMW 642 +5%
10 Mercedes 592 +1%
11 Toyota 527 -8%
12 Skoda 495 +6%
13 Nissan 458 +14%
14 Hyundai 398 +11%
15 Seat 306 +1%
16 Kia 294 +12%
17 Volvo 255 +11%
18 Dacia 252 -5%
19 Suzuki 178 -9%
20 Chevrolet 176 -2%
21 MINI 168 +19%
22 Honda 150 -20%
23 Mazda 137,447 -25%
24 Alfa Romeo 131 +19%
25 Mitsubishi 115 +7%
26 Lancia 106 -6%
27 smart 80 -4%
28 Land Rover 75 +12%
29 Lexus 27 +53%
30 Jeep 24 +61%
31 Jaguar 23 -15%
Others 125,500
Total 13,573,550 1.4% decrease.

This year the Fiat Group and the Chysler Group have been merging. I think ACEA got it wrong with how they addressed this. Lancia now includes all Chrysler sales, Jeep is alone and Dodge has been included in the 'Other Fiat' figures with Ferrari and Maserati. Why not keep the sales under which ever brand they were sold?

European car figures would have been poorer but for solid sales in Germany. 2012 could well reinforce the trends of 2011.

UK Vehicle Production: 2011

2011: UK car production was up 5.8%, from 1,270,000 in 2010 to 1,344,000. I was thinking it would be more, but it was and OK result. BMW's building the Countryman in Austria due to capacity restraints in the UK, and Honda reducing sales in Europe had a dampening effect. For the situation in data:

Nissan - Juke, Note & Qashqai : 480,500 / +13.5%

Land Rover - All models : 238,200 / +33%

MINI - MINI : 191,500 / -11.5%

Vauxhall - Astra : 138,000 / +34.4%

Toyota - Auris & Avensis : 128,100 / -6.5%

Honda - Civic 5 Dr, CRV & Jazz : 97,500 / -30%

Jaguar - All models : 50,000 / -11.4%

Bentley - All models : 7,350 / +53%

Others - Various : 12756 / +1%

Total - 1,343,800 +5.8%

2012: Nissan should increase but it must near its upper limits now. Land Rover should have strong growth for the year, especially with the Evoque. Vauxhall has more capacity but it depends on decisions made by GM Opel.
Toyota and especially Honda should increase, but Honda needs to fight back in Europe to really grow. Jaguar may have modest growth, but realistically another model is what will really alter production totals for the leaping cat.

The UK car industry should be dead, the way the country threw it away with inept, short sighted government and management. However, UK car making has been thrown a lifeline. There won't be any more car makers opening up factories in the future, so these car plant operations need to be encouraged to flourish. Signs of that are there.
